With its own town charter for the area around Alter Platz, which dates back to 1254, Klagenfurt can boast of an interesting history. Alter Platz was the urban center up to the 16th century, when a disastrous fire destroyed the city in 1514. It was necessary to rebuild the city. But the Habsburg emperor Maximilian the First had no funds and made the city a present to representatives of the estate-based society.
This was not only a unique act in the German history of law, it was also the basis for the flourishing of the city. Alter Platz was lined with houses on the left and right while there were city gates both west and east. Long and narrow parcels of land with the so-called farming-citizens' houses bordered the square, a structure which is still prevailing today.
In the 17th century when the building on Alter Platz no. 3 was erected, there were many Italian architects at work in Klagenfurt. This is to whom the city owes its southern, familial atmosphere. It was in the middle of the 19th century when an elaborately decorated main cornice was added. Unfortunately the old arcaded courtyard was totally destroyed during an alteration in the 19th century.
Around the corner of the building, in Kramergasse, one of the first Austrian pedestrian zones was opened in 1961, inviting visitors to stroll. Cars were generally banned from the historical city center early on.
Klagenfurt's vibrant life can also be encountered in the shops in our house, which received its finishing touches in a redevelopment in 1997.
